- Surprise! The Boreostracon is not
- a dinosaur at all! It is a mammal,
- one of the Glyptodonts. It filled
- the same niche in the Ice Age
- ecology that the Ankylosaurians
- filled in the late Cretaceous period
- -- that of a totally armored
- herbivore with a powerful defensive
- weapon on its tail.
- It developed in South America and
- spread to North America during the
- Ice Age. Related species lived in
- Africa, Asia and Europe.
- The Boreostracon grew to more than
- fifteen feet long and had a
- four-foot tail.^
